Prostate Cancer: Early Detection
While cancer is one of the deadliest ailments it can lead to death if not diagnosed and treated early. The two major cancers which affect men are skin cancer followed by cancer of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is known to take away many lives every year. Yet these lives could have been saved, if only the disease was detected early when it is easier to treat it.
What is prostate cancer?
While all of us have heard of the disease called prostate cancer, it is possible that many of us do not know what it is. Around the neck of he urinary bladder of men, there is a gland called the prostate gland. The secretion from this gland which has five lobes is the major constituent of the seminal fluid. The gland is found only in men. The chances of developing prostate cancer increases with age and men over 65 are particularly prone to this ailment. Other than aging there are several factors which increase the chances of developing this disease in men.
Diet and prostate cancer
The race to which the man belongs plays a very important role in his increased chances of getting affected by prostate cancer. For instance, African American men are at a higher risk than Chinese or Japanese men. Over and above many other differences between these races like geographical, etc, the diet is one of the very big differentiators. It has been seen that prostate cancer is common in men who use used to diets which are rich in fat. Other than prostate cancer, fat rich diet can also cause obesity. This is the reason why doctors usually prescribe diet rich in fiber and low in fats for men. When you are habituated to having food rich in fat, these extra fats accumulate to make way for prostate cancer and a host of other illnesses. While environmental conditions are also responsible for men developing prostate cancer, sometimes it is hereditary and the antecedents may have had prostate cancer. One of the strong advices from doctors for men is to exercise regularly, to keep their bodies fit.
Symptoms of prostate cancer
Though there are several symptoms for this disease, not many are clearly understood or visible from a lay person's view. So it is best to go for regular medical check ups once you cross the age of 50. Some of the obvious symptoms of prostate cancer include: difficulty in having and sustaining erection, pain and burning sensation during urination and presence of blood in semen.
Early detection is a lifesaver
To get relief from cancer in general and prostate cancer in particular, early diagnosis and detection is of paramount importance. It is not wise to delay a visit to the doctor if you notice any thing unusual. All such symptoms must be reported to the doctor at the earliest opportunity. The methods of detection and treatment of prostate cancer have reached very advanced stages in its development. So if detected early, cancer can be treated with successful outcome.
